Thanksgiving Centers for Kindergarten with Flashlight Turkeys

·

There is a little surprise hiding in these turkeys, and all it takes is a flashlight to find it! Shine the light behind a turkey, watch a picture appear, and help that little turkey find its matching tail. It is such a playful way to bring something fresh to your November centers.

These Thanksgiving centers for kindergarten give children a reason to look closely, talk about what they notice, and practice a skill they are learning. Choose beginning sounds, CVC words, or number matching to fit your group. You can keep the familiar flashlight routine while changing the learning goal.

Want the seasonal activities together? Take a peek at the Flashlight Activities Bundle here. The three turkey activities featured below are included.

Two children reveal a heart picture with a flashlight and match the turkey to a lowercase h tail.

Set up your turkey flashlight center

Gather your chosen turkey activity, a flashlight, the matching cards, and the coordinating recording page. Add pencils or crayons, depending on the page you are using. Each turkey resource includes printing directions, so follow those for preparing the reveal cards rather than treating them like ordinary one-sided flashcards.

Prepare and test one turkey before making the full set. Hold the flashlight behind its body and check that the hidden picture or number is easy to see. Then put out a small selection of cards in a tray. A few choices can make that first round feel much more manageable.

Before partners begin, model where to hold the light and remind children to point it at the cards, never at anyone’s eyes. Demonstrate one complete turn, including putting the matching pieces together and recording an answer.

Turkey beginning sounds with a surprise inside

For your Thanksgiving literacy centers, the alphabet and beginning-sounds turkeys make a sweet place to start. Children reveal a picture, name it, listen for its first sound, and find the turkey tail with the matching letter.

The heart turkey shown here matches the letter h. The grapes turkey matches g. Ask, “What do you hear at the beginning of grapes?” before helping a child connect that sound to the letter.

Flashlight reveals grapes on a turkey matched to a lowercase g tail above an uppercase alphabet recording page.

On the alphabet page pictured, children find and color the matching uppercase letter. That gives you another chance to connect the lowercase letter on the tail with its uppercase partner.

Preview the picture names with children who need vocabulary support. If naming a picture is difficult, supply the word and let the child focus on listening for the beginning sound.

Practice reading and writing Thanksgiving CVC words

When children are ready to blend sounds, bring out the CVC word flashlight turkeys. The turkey reveals a picture, and its matching tail has the printed word. The Thanksgiving table writing page gives children a place to record the word, too.

Flashlight reveals a cab picture beside a cab word tail and a Thanksgiving CVC writing page.

For the cab example, introduce the picture name first: “This is a cab.” Then have children attend to the letters in cab, say their sounds, and blend them to read the word. The picture can confirm the match, but the reading work comes from the print.

For spelling practice, invite children to say the word, segment its sounds, and write the matching letters before checking the word tail. Choose words with sound-spelling patterns you have already taught. A small set that children can work through thoughtfully is plenty!

Add turkey ten-frame matching to your math centers

The flashlight fun can visit your math table, too. With the turkey number and ten-frame activity, children reveal a numeral and find the card showing the matching quantity. The resource also includes a number hunt and tracing page.

A flashlight reveals zero on a turkey beside ten-frame cards showing zero, two, and four.

Ask children to explain a match: “How do you know this card shows four?” Some may count each picture; others may recognize the arrangement. If a child needs support, offer fewer choices and invite them to touch each picture as they count.

For an extra conversation, place two completed matches side by side and ask which has more. This is an optional extension you can add with the cards already on your table.

Keep partner turns simple and purposeful

Try one child as the flashlight helper and one as the matcher, then switch jobs after every turkey. Both children can say the sound, read the word, or explain the number match before moving on.

Introduce the routine in a teacher-led small group before putting it into an independent center or morning tub. Keep alphabet, CVC, and math materials in separate trays so children know exactly which task they are doing. For children who find handling the pieces tricky, a partner can hold the turkey while they do the thinking and matching.

Bring a little flashlight fun to November

A basket of colorful turkeys and a flashlight can make familiar practice feel like a new discovery. Start with the skill your children need, leave room for a little conversation, and enjoy seeing what they find.
