I love using centers in my classroom. I have found that I get the best results whenever the centers are fresh, engaging, and directly tied to the standards that we are working on in the classroom. These ‘Back to School Math Centers’ are directly tied to the common core standards and support number recognition, counting, subitizing, shape recognition, and shape attributes. They also include follow up practice pages that match each math learning station!

A simple routine for the first weeks of school

Start with one station and model how to use the materials, take turns, and put everything away. Let children practice the routine before introducing more choices. Keep groups small enough that everyone has a turn to count, name a shape, or explain an answer.

As children work, listen to their counting and ask how they recognized a number or shape. Use what you notice to decide who needs another model and who is ready for a little more independence. These are teaching suggestions you can adapt to your classroom.
